The Argo Semeru is a premium day train that operates daily in each direction between Jakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia. Named after Mount Semeru, it's arguably Java's most complete train experience, taking in 821km of east, central and west Java. As a premium service, this train operates with Executive and Compartment Class only.
The Semeru is not the fastest way to cross Java. The full day journey comes in at close to 11 hours. The Argo Bromo Anggrek on the northern line does the same journey in closer to eight hours.
But the Argo Semeru was never really designed to be the fastest option. It's a slower form of travel that provides best in class views, particularly between Cirebon and Yogyakarta. The train offers 16 unique compartment suites that have been compared to airline business or first class. The fully enclosed single occupancy private rooms orient around passenger comfort over the journey.
For those who enjoy travelling by train a full day trip on the Argo Semeru is a must do. The compartment suites do come at a premium over executive class, although if it's a once in a lifetime kind of journey it's well worth the additional charge over executive class.
